Seeking Truth and Pursuing Innovation, Ushering in a New Era of Artificial General Intelligence

About

As a core technology driving the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation, artificial intelligence exerts a profound and far-reaching impact on economic development, social progress, and the international political and economic landscape. In response to national strategic needs and at the forefront of global technological competition, Zhejiang University established the College of Artificial Intelligence in July 2025.

The college oversees the development of two first-level disciplines—Artificial Intelligence and Design—as well as two undergraduate programs—Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Engineering and Creative Design. It currently hosts two national-level platforms: the National Innovation Platform for AI Industry-Education Integration and the National AI Textbook Base. The college plans to establish research directions in areas such as Intelligent Theory and Systems, Intelligent Design, AI Software-Hardware Synergy, Autonomous Intelligent Systems, and Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence.

Milestones of Innovation

Zhejiang University is one of the earliest institutions in China to conduct artificial intelligence research and cultivate talent in the field. Its AI research can be traced back to 1978, when it began recruiting graduate students in artificial intelligence. An AI Research Laboratory was established in 1982 and later upgraded to the Institute of Artificial Intelligence in 1987. Consistently placing AI at the forefront of disciplinary development, the university became one of the first in China to offer an undergraduate program in Artificial Intelligence in 2019, and was also approved to establish the country’s first interdisciplinary doctoral program in AI, thus creating an integrated talent cultivation system spanning bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.
